HPI Frequently Asked Questions

The Eastern CT Healthcare Pipeline Initiative Program is provided at NO COST to participants. The program is funded by the Eastern CT Workforce Investment Board (EWIB) through a variety of federal, state and private grants.

Who is providing this training?

Training is currently provided by American Professional Education Services (APES), C.N.A. Bootcamp of CT, EASTCONN, Eastern Connecticut State University, New London Adult Education (NLAE), Health Education Center (HEC), CT State -Three Rivers, CT State-Quinebaug Valley Community College,  and others.

How long does the training last?

The intensive, work-based classroom training programs are typically 5 to 10 weeks long. The day and time the classes are scheduled varies.

Do I get paid wages during the classroom training?

There are no wages paid during the classroom training.

What happens after the classroom training?

Job search assistance is available upon class completion. It is recommended that graduates attend the Interviewing and Resume Writing workshops available at the local American Job Center to prepare for interview success.

What do I need to do to get into the Program?
  1. Complete the application on the EWIB website (www.ewib.org/healthcare). You will receive a confirmation email. *Add: workskills2020@gmail.com to your address book or check your spam box for this incoming email! This email is important as it comes with instructions on how to schedule the Healthcare Skills Inventory Session.
  2. Attend a Healthcare Skills Inventory (HSI) session. Your current skills will be measured to demonstrate your ability to successfully complete the classroom training. This session covers basic reading comprehension, customer service mindset, and following written instructions.  An average score of 70% is required to advance to classroom training.

    The HSI is currently being sent to applicants through email and can be completed remotely. 
  3. Completing a profile on the CT Department of Labor’s website (www.CTHires.com) If you are using CTHires to find a job, you will need to upload a resume on your profile.  If you need help with your resume, you can attend the Fundamentals of Resume Writing Workshop or the CTHires Resume Builder Workshop at your local American Job Center.

  4. Once these steps are completed, the Healthcare Navigator will send an email to schedule an orientation where you will learn more about the training, job search opportunities available and hear about healthcare jobs.
Is there financial assistance while in the Program?

Yes, there are supportive services available to participants while in classroom training. Examples include: travel reimbursement, daycare assistance, books, tools, and clothing. Stipends and On the Job Training (OJT) may be available.

Who is eligible for the Program?

The program targets unemployed/underemployed CT Residents authorized to work in the U.S.

Due to the hours of the training classes, if you are working in a full-time position, it may be challenging to accommodate both your job and the training class.

How will this program affect my Unemployment Benefits?

Participation in this training program will not stop or extend your Unemployment Benefits. All unemployed and underemployed individuals interested in the program will be given equal consideration.

What is the Healthcare Pipeline Initiative?

The HPI trainings are designed to meet the needs of in-demand healthcare occupations. Employers may work with training providers to customize the curriculum to the needs of an employer to ensure the students learn the skills necessary for the job. 

The Healthcare Pipeline is modeled after the nationally acclaimed Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative (MPI). Our experience with the MPI has shown us that pipeline graduates have an increased retention rate with their employers..

Are there any hiring incentives?

There may be On the Job Training (OJT) available under certain circumstances. Contact your business services representative for more information about available hiring incentives.

Where do the candidates come from?

Candidates are referred from either the American Job Centers of Eastern CT, an employer, the community colleges or they can find the link on their own and register.

Before going through a training, they will take an assessment that has been informed by regional healthcare employers. The assessment  covers basic reading comprehension, customer service mindset, and following written instructions. Applicants must complete this assessment with a 70 or above to qualify for a training class. These students will then be screened by staff from the American Job Center and placed in the appropriate training
